An iconic building is set to host a gathering of giraffes later this year – following this summer’s Worcester Stands Tall art trail.
Worcester Cathedral will have a dedicated giraffe sculpture at a location on the trail before hosting its Farewell Event in the Chapter House.
The event will see 30 decorated giraffe sculptures go on display to the public for the last time before they are auctioned to raise money for the St Richard’s Hospice Build 2020 Appeal.
Worcester Stands Tall is a 10-week long sculpture trail which will see the colourful giraffes tower through the city’s streets between Monday, July 9 and Sunday, September 16. The Farewell Event takes place between Friday, October 5 and Sunday, October 7.
The cathedral joins the ranks of organisations supporting the project – and is already home to a pink giraffe, pictured in the Victorian stained glass of its recently-restored West Window.
Canon Georgina Byrne, of Worcester Cathedral, said:
“We are delighted to be taking part in Worcester Stands Tall.
“St Richard’s Hospice does tremendous work, and we hope that many people will take part in the event this summer to support the hospice, following the giraffes around the city – in which the cathedral has been standing very tall for centuries.”
Sara Matthews, Project Manager of Worcester Stands Tall, said:
“We are thrilled to have Worcester Cathedral involved with the trail as an Official Supplier.
“The building is such a magnificent, symbolic part of the city – and its fabulous pink giraffe provides a perfect link with our trail.
“We just know our Farewell Event will be a spectacular way for the public to see all our lovely giraffes together in one place.”
During the trail, there will also be 26 giraffe calf sculptures decorated by schools and community groups and displayed in Crowngate Shopping Centre.
The St Richard’s Hospice Build 2020 Appeal aims to raise the final £1.4m needed to build a bigger hospice, enabling more patients and families to be cared for in Worcestershire.
The total cost for expanding and redeveloping the existing building in Wildwood Drive, Worcester, is £5.3m. For more information about Build 2020 visit www.strichards.org.uk/build2020
